Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia, bordered by China to the north and by India to the south, east, and west. The Himalayan mountain range runs across Nepal. The country has eight of the ten highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest. Modern Nepal was unified on December 21, 1768, by Prithvi Narayan Shah. It remained a kingdom until 2006.The recent history of Nepal is full of struggles for democratic government and intermittent direct monarchic rule. There was a severe civil war between government forces and guerrillas of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) from 1996 till 2006. The Interim Parliament declared it a Federal Democratic Republic and the Constituent Assembly accepted it on May 28, 2008.
